PS: Every time it rains, the copper wire from the Telstra box to our house craps out and we can't use the landline.
Copper is victorian technology - the era, not the state!

Data management is a huge aspect of mining operations - second only to the plant machinery in terms of cost. Mines output staggering amounts of data, which in a copper-based world has to be managed onsite. Mines already have disproportionate IT costs and having full remote management would save them a fortune. First imagine Xstrata managing its 57 mine sites from a single office building in Rockhampton. Then imagine each individual system specialist managing the system 24/7 from their house. The accountants are salivating.

FWIW - outside of music, high volume data management is what I actually do for a living.

Good to know.
That's the only good thing about mining then.

I have been planning to move somewhere where the NBN was already working however.
Not sure where. maybe Adelaide.

Manning - this is a discussion about our industry, and its ultimate survival, not a clairvoyant future prediction.
You have SO much faith in the unknown.

I'll stay with the facts that have been stated for now, consult some palm reader maybe in the future..

And I wont risk my industry's survival on a "hunch"

I dont give a shit about politics/ ALP NLP - whoever!
- but I do care deeply about what is on offer for our future, and I dont do palm reading at this important juncture in time...

But - fine by me if you want to read the "horror scopes"
I'll fight for whats on offer - now.

Chris

I work in high volume data. It's not "faith in the unknown", it's what I do every day.

And I can tell you from firsthand knowledge that the CEOs of Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne are pressuring for exactly what you want. FTTP and nothing less.

The real financial value of the NBN is not in TV or creative arts but in the enormous cost savings it represents to big business. That is why it will happen - that is why the NBN is getting built in the first place.

No, the needs of the music industry aren't being considered, they never will be. That's just reality.

But for once in our lives, something that big business wants (and hence WILL get) actually aligns with the needs of the creative arts.

So enjoy it, it probably won't happen again.

I have no doubt something resembling the NBN will rollout in the CBD's where big company's are headquartered. As you say, Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne. But the Labor plan is to dismantle the technological divide between CBD and rural. Not only allowing those outside the major cities to engage with the rest of the world, but to raise the standard of our schools and hospitals via the web.
It's expensive to own and run a studio in the CBD. No one wants a studio in a residential area.
Outside Australia the music industry is operating globally. I know people in London working with people in LA daily.
I gotta agree with Chris. The NBN will be a lifeblood for Aussie creatives, and allow us to live in cheaper locations and not clog up the roads on the daily commute into The City.
Again I agree with Chris. Your predictions are comforting, but I don't trust the LNP to roll out superfast broadband to small towns, where there are no mines and no company CEOs. Abbott and Turnbull have said as much. they think it's a waste of money to bring the NBN to non CBD, non businesspark customers.

Sorry Manning - I'll call you out on your data industry "blindness"

I respect you and your field of expertise - but why would a business man want a guy in the western suburbs of Syd to have the NBN? some low life dole bludging extremely talented muso?
No-one gives a shit about the poor, if their aint no industry needing it nearby, then there is NO way in hell this guy will get it. Dream on!!!

I believe if we ALL get the NBN - to the house, then we can be creative, we can invent/invest in new businesses.
Banks /mining/Coles/Woolies - who cares what they do, and how much extreme influence they have.
I'm interested in the creative persons needs to communicate their talents and crafts to the world.
Chris W's situation is a perfect example.

Why would the mining companies want ME to have the NBN - I'm no-where near ANY industry ?
But Ive got it tomorrow morning!!
I'm just lucky that my state is retarded - hopeless, stuck in dinosaur industries (like coal mining) unemployment highest in the land.
Thankfully we got a leg up down here from A government - do you think Turnbull would want remote Tas to have NBN?
Give me a break and come back to earth!!!!

I don't buy your pamphlet "inside" excitement

LOL - sealed road.

The NBN has gone to all the labor marginals, and the independents.
I don't wanna move to Armidale or Tamworth. Coffs Harbour and Kiama are too expensive (by the beach).
If only they'd put the NBN in a major mining area, like my neighbourhood Singleton. It's not even on the five year radar here. If only I had a power broking indie like Tony Windsor instead of safely seated Joel Fitzgibbon. :D

And if you were an accountant for Westpac, you could now do your job just as effectively, for a 10-15% less salary that what they have to pay a Sydney resident...

...which is precisely why the banks want the NBN.

Manning - with the utmost respect,
who here cares what the banks want?
its irrelevant to OUR industry I'm sorry, and to every up and coming muso.
I wont draw the straws you are using to "imagine" the future.

..try another unrelated industry that you believe will have complete authority over the next government ... and really affect the well being of the music/recording industry.

I have heard this kind of thing before.

The paperless office, remember that one?

I do know at least with the NBN the kitten videos and porn won't take long to download.

I don't watch kitten videos.

I'd love to know the strategy behind the rollout locations. When you look at the map and what areas are at what stage, there is no linearity to it at all, it bunny hops all over the place. Isn't it fibre optic cable..? Doesn't cable work good in like lengths rather than a bit here, a bit there, fill in that gap later etc, at least that's how i usually wire studios up. I am looking at it too simply..it's always a possibility with me. I find it confusing that an apartment building about 2 km from me has it installed now, but my street doesn't get it till at least next year by the look of things.

Chris - I've done everything I can to show you why the NBN will go ahead - just as you want.

Fact - Big Business runs this country.

Normally that is a bad thing, but in this one case, it is to our advantage.

Big business want the NBN, for all the reasons I have given. If you still can't see how it all works, there's not much else I can say.

And Wiz - the paperless office certainly exists - I work in one. Most corporate workplaces I've been in over the past decade are almost entirely paperless.

China - if you correlate the the rollout locations to the home (or holiday home) locations of senior executives, major political donors and MP relatives, you'd probably get somewhere.

Rick - ah... girls... very much a shortage.
Very much.... extremely such...
No wonder they put the NBN in here first!

Ive got a Sydney GF.
Whenever I go to my local pub (a pub in the middle of no-where), after driving my GF to the airport, the local guys say " YAY - look - here comes the smartest guy in Tasmania"
They cant believe I can drive my GF to the airport, and then come home.
They think its more important than bringing Daniel Johns to the pub...

Sorry Manning - I don't buy your rusted on predictions, I would like to though..
I reckon if your mate Rupert gets in - we can test how successful a clairvoyant you are?

Yes I vote Green. FWIW, Christine Milne is also a long time personal friend of mine. We got arrested together at the Franklin in 83.

And understanding the nature of big business does not mean I endorse it. But in this one rare case, the needs of the artist and the capitalist align, which is why I will be right.

And I'm still deeply offended at your Murdoch comment. Not kidding.

Manning - finally,
I dont care too much about politics - or parties, I care for peoples opportunities in life.
I dont care at all about big business - I respect philanthropists , not horders.
I dont care what BIG business wants - I care about fairness.

And I REALLY care about this industry - and anything that will make it stronger/ more valued.

The NBN will do this - and i will not buy ANY business "predictions" of any sort that you preach.
So anyone "predicting" the future of the NBN being diametrically opposed to what the LNP is saying it will do, is in the twilight zone camp.
Its so deluded to think big business will have a positive effect on the music industry..
Its NOT going to happen - irrespective of your "inside" info you place such relevance and the utmost faith in.
Again - with respect.
Lets get back to reality. what is happening NOW.

Agree Myles - no offense Manning _ I take back the Rupert innuendo.

Lets talk about our shitty industry.. and how we can make it better.

My typing should look better tomorrow - the NBN will make it more "creative" and "sharper"
You guys let me know if it looks any different, due to the speed it arrived at.
