Postby The Tasmanian » Fri Aug 30, 2013 12:00 pm

For Sale
Racked pair of Altec 1591A's
-> 2 x mic pre's, 2 x line amps, 2 x compressors.
Modded addition of 48 volt phantom power, switches on rear.
Huge sounding preamps.

I purchased them from Myles here a couple of years ago, who has used them a lot more extensively than I have, maybe he can pitch in on his experiences too.
Not getting enough use from me - someone else could have much fun!

GoCase shallow 6RU case.
Showroom condition.
$1600 for the pair

These are a pretty funky set of comps with an excellent and very high gain mic preamp. The mic preamp is the 1588c canister which is a module that features a transformer input and a class A gain stage of 40db or so. That feeds the comp and with the fixed make up stage there's something like 90db in the unit. There's also a separate line input that you can blend with the mic input or use independently for mix processing. I racked this with a JLM power supply rather than altering the 110v circuit as it has a 24vc input for powering off batteries in the case of a power failure in a radio station. Great colour box but can be used cleanly depending on the source. Great for making some colourful bass or mashing a snare or room mic but I had some success with double bass too on jazz album too. I sold them when I was moving to a more portable setup but I'm sure who ever buys them will dig them. And yes they are not valve units...

forgot to mention the comp which has basic timing controls including a very long release setting. These could be modded easily if you wanted different options.
