G5 for free

Postby audioio » Wed Sep 04, 2013 11:41 pm

Hi Trockers,
a little while back someone wrote about a faulty Mac, and someone else noted that power supplies can be an issue. I can't remember whether this was in connection to Mac Pros or G5s or both. However, considering some are still running PCI cards (esp. Pro Tools HD) on G5s, this might interest you.

I have a dual 1.8 G5 with a failing hard drive. In all other respects, it's working fine. I got it for free from my workplace, so I've had a good run with it, so I might as well give it away.

I have no box or foam inserts, and I'll probably keep the older-style keyboard. I have nothing to put it in, so it's pick up only, from Melbourne (Balwyn).

When I set this up, I bought two 500GB hard drives, and set them up as a partitioned RAID. The OSX partition on one of the drives has fallen over and cannot be repaired. I've been thinking for some time I should buy a NAS to do network printing, joint file storage, and maybe some fancy tricks as a mail server. The failure of the partition has prompted me to get off my backside and buy a NAS.

Now here's the disclaimer. I've migrated my emails to my Macbook, and important files to the NAS. But I'd like one more chance to go over it before I get rid of the machine. that probably won't be until early next week. After that, I'll have a go at reformatting the drives, although I might just throw away the faulty one.

If you want it, let me know. I'm pretty sure I have a copy of Leopard lying around somewhere, so I'll throw that in too if I find it and you want it.

Hi David, I'd be keen to get this to keep my G5 going If no one's grabbed it yet?

And the G5 goes to....

...Barney!

I'll let you know when I'm ready to let it go (as I said, next week). Also see my PM.

Gosh. Are bits of my machine going to end up far and wide?
