Hi Andrew, it IS indeed very interesting. Not sure if you own or have used Aalto the Madrona Labs soft synth but it is the only softsynth i use and the closest thing to a buchla in SW land. The Soundplane was designed and built by the same guys and used with Aalto is very expressive. The soundplane runs its own OSC based controller program and has a multi stage calibration system which can be finetuned for your own playing preferences. This is constantly being updated and refined by the designer who is very active on the Madrona Labs forums for advice and troubleshooting. The controller program has standard OSC or Midi routing options and is also easily setup with a Kyma system (AMAZING video demo of someone using it with Kyma on youtube).
Routing the soundplanes OSC messages to CV for hardware synths is as easy as setting it up with a suitable Expert Sleepers cv unit (the expert sleepers developer is also an active soundplane user). You can also easily route midi directly to soft or hardware synths from the controller software.
Playing the board takes a little getting used to but certainly offers great deal more control and access to timbres and style of fretless and much more expressive type of playing as opposed to the traditional and midi keyboards. Very similar to the Haken Continuum although without the exorbitant price and unnecessary inbuilt synth module.
I am sure we will see Randy at Madrona further develop the controller software and more of his own softsynths specifically aimed at the soundplane in the near future. I wish i could hang onto it but ive had the ultimatum and i chose the Knifonium.

The build quality is excellent and Its amazing to look at and play, As is Aalto. If you're looking to go a little outside the box with your ability to create and perform new sounds this is a very cool place to start, there are some very high profile artists using the 50 or so soundplanes in existence...

Hope this helps, let me know if you have any more questions. :-B
