careful when upgrading

i know we all should know this right…
but i just had a friend call me all freaked out.
before you upgrade anything (OS included!) check to make sure all your software and hardware is going to remain compatible
and DEFINITELY clone your system (even though i know you have it properly backed up) i use carbon copy cloner but there are plenty of other options
that way - if they upgrade doesn't go how you planned - you can just go back to where you were with your clone. lots of programs don't like "downgrading" (mac os) or uninstalling - so this is the best way to be safe.

and incase somehow you missed it…. PT does not work with the latest mac OS mavericks
just cause its currently being offered free
doesn't mean you should do it.

PT works with Mavericks just fine, actually. Avid just says it isn't supported, so caveat emptor, and all that.

Mind you, I haven't and won't upgrade my main rig until Avid says it's kosher, but my MacBook and a backup iMac are both quite happily running PT10 and Mavericks with zero issues.

well i, like you, havnt tried
but i can assure you - for alex (the man in question who went ahead and upgraded) it certainly does NOT.
maybe has something to do with his being an older computer, and the combo of old comp, new OS doesn't always sit well.
irrespective - the other points remain very valid
1 - check its actually "okay" to update before you press yes on something (and obviously much easier/ better if your machines arnt connected to the net)
2 - if you do upgrade anything - backup first (well, backup always, but clone before upgrades)

Oh yeah, I don't disagree with you (apologies if it seemed like it), backups are muy importante, make sure an upgrade is actually workable before you do it, all that.

I was just making the distinction between "technically unsupported" and "will not work".

which - even when technically supported - is still an issue! (like my avid/ PT one… NOW, after me making the change they have issued the statement saying it won't work)
