Remote Recording Locations in/around Sydney?

Hi everyone.

I am working with a bunch of like minded people (http://www.mircreation.com) doing hi-res stereo and surround recording in ambient spaces. We have some projects coming up and are wanting to add to our arsenal of locations.

I would love to hear of churches, halls, large spaces, school chapels etc that people have recorded successfully in. In and around Sydney, or even NSW. Or any leads, rumours etc.

So, please tell us where to find a dead quiet church with a perfectly in tune Steinway D, with a great pub down the road

Hi Ben and welcome to Turtlerock. I can't help with locations around Sydney but I'm quite interested in what you are
doing and will buy your CD online. What I'd like to know before purchasing though is what format did you use for your original recordings as I would rather purchase files that have not been converted.

I had a great time in the Woolloomooloo PYCY a few years ago.

They were very gracious to lend us the space for an entire weekend. Made as much noise as we wanted during business hours.

You could hear traffic outside if you listened carefully but it wasn't an issue for the project.

Did drums one day and then guitars the next.

Really big sounding space, sort of compressed, sandy if that makes sense.

There was even the opportunity to set it up like a control room / live room setup with some longer cables which I did on day 2.

I can't remember the managers name or details as I didn't organise the visit, but it might be worthwhile contacting them.

Hey Chris.

Thanks for your interest. We are recording at DXD (352.8 kHz). It is all then mixed and mastered at this resolution.
We aim to create the sound in the first place with mic placement, a great space and allow the musicians to mix the album themselves in the space with no cans or just open back cans. We then record that sound with great mics (DPA, Schoeps) and try and do very little to it after that.
It's a philosophy that obviously initially lends itself to jazz and classical, but we have a project with pedal steel etc coming up. Any acoustic (and sometimes not) works really well.

My album was a small first step for us. It was a kernel of the philosophy.

It was recorded. mixed and then mastered in Norway by Morten Lindberg (2L Records) all at DXD with no downsampling until conversion to various resolutions by the Weiss Saracon.
So the DXD version is the one you'd be after.

I've been lusting after Nagra and Schoeps gear recently, as a path into making high quality portable stereo recordings of jazz combos and such, so I'll be very interested to read about and hear the work you've been doing.

Hi I've got a stereo Soundfield sps422 recently rebuilt by Soundfield. I may want to sell. If you haven't heard one you will be amazed. A Soundfield mic is the default setup for all BBC recordings.
Perfect for this style of recording.
