What would you say is a fair price for an ampex ag440 (or two)?

1/2" 4 track version c
and
1" 8 track

the 4 track needs new grub screws for the headblock adjustment, and the 8 track needs a psu built for the audio electronics and could do with a recap of the cards.

first thought, run for the hills.
second thought, buy it, move to the hills and grow a longer beard

Hey Sean, I've sent you an email.

As for value... not sure about the 1/2", but the lack of a PSU for the 1" makes it a parts machine, ie worth more to part it out. If the heads are shot, then it's worth even less.

Having said that, building a PSU is quite doable but a bit of an investment (time and money)... the machine would have to be in otherwise excellent condition and have good head life to justify anything more than beer money. And with no way of testing it (unless you had access to a spare PSU), it's a bit of a lottery.

Having said that, I've done stupider things. More than once.

Oh and yes you will need some sort of beard to get it going properly.
