WTB: Valley People/Allison Research TA-101, TA-103

Postby Alistair » Wed Aug 06, 2014 3:56 pm

A bit of a long shot, but does anyone have any spare Valley People/Allison Research TA-101 (green) or TA-103 (brown) opamps they would be keen to sell? I need one of each, but would be happy to buy a few spares.
Valley people is supposedly manufacturing the TA-101 again, and I have spoken to them, but still not having much luck. They wanted me to order 100+...

I'm always amazed what people here have stashed away in the cupboards!

Hi Chris,

It was over a year ago when I got in touch so I've just rechecked my emails, and my memory was wrong re: order numbers! Must have gotten confused with some other unobtanium part I was chasing...

They are gearing up to do a new run hopefully, but haven't yet, and don't have any TA-103's.

I spoke to Zack, who was nice but couldn't help unfortunately.

Close but I'm pretty sure the Transamp opamp and that TA-101 and TA-103 are completely different things, but in the same size package.

I believe the TA-101 is a preamp opamp similar to a transamp, and the TA-103 is a line amp gain stage used in compressors in Valley People stuff. But don't quote me on that!

Their website indicates that the TA-101 was used in the Kepex II and the Gain Brain II..... so I just had a look at one of my Kepex IIs and it has a blue doover with "Allison Research EGC101" printed on it.

... and the Gain Brain II has a little add-on board that looks similar to the Transamp - it also has the EGC101 blue doover on it.

... errr ummm.... it looked blue to me, but I'm colourblind so it might be green....

Anyway, I see Kepex IIs on eBay for between 100 to 200 each..... Gain Brain IIs have been around 350 each lately....

fwiw I'll have a TR804 rack with 4 x Kepex IIs in it for sale in the not too distant future, but it will probably be a bit more than you want to spend for just those TA's.

I have some V.P. TA 101's from a Soundworkshops console, they were used as the VCA in their fader automation. They are green.
I also have two of the (I think) earlier blue ones in a Symetrix compressor that I wont be using again.
You want?
Cheers,
Paul

PM on it's way Paul!

Ian- this unit I'm fixing is definitely not worth cannibalising working units for!
