I just remembered his name, Dave Burton.

I think he worked as a tech under Bill Toussky at Metropolis at one stage and was involved in the setup of Fortissimo Studios.

Just googled Dave Burton and hit the jackpot for info. The Melbourne Audio Engineering community of the 70's seems to be occupied by more than it's fair share of brilliant minds. Turns out Dave Burton is now the
executive director of Compumedics:

David Burton, Ph.D., is the founder, Chairman and CEO of Compumedics. After establishment of Compumedics the company was listed on the ASX in 2000, and has been awarded 24 awards for design, innovation, business and exports including the Australian Exporter of the Year in 1998 and Small Business of the Year in 1999.



Dr. Burton started his career at the Bureau of Meteorology, where he studied radar techniques and electronic equipment. He founded Linear Transfer Pty Ltd, which designed, manufactured and marketed high fidelity recording and sound equipment. He was awarded an Associate Diploma in Engineering (Electronics) by the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. (Eng. Sc.) by Monash University, Melbourne (Australia). Dr. Burton’s engineering background includes the design and project management of the Compumedics’ first sleep laboratory and portable sleep systems. Dr. Burton has authored fifteen patents or patent applications that form part of Compumedics’ key intellectual property.



Dr. Burton has served as an advisor for the Victorian Government as a member of the Council for Knowledge, Innovation, Science and Engineering (KISE), being the Victorian Government’s key advisory body on issues and policies focusing on science and innovation.



Dr. Burton was presented the Clunies Ross National Science and Technology Award in 2002 for his development of innovative sleep monitoring technology. He was awarded the 2003 Centenary Medal by the Prime Minister and Governor General of Australia for outstanding contribution to science and technology, particularly public science policy. In 2003 Dr. Burton was awarded the Ernst & Young Victorian Entrepreneur of the year award for technology, communications, E-commerce and life sciences. In 2007 Dr. Burton was inducted into the Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame in recognition of manufacturing achievements and world-wide medical device exports.



Dr. Burton served as a Victorian Government adviser as a Board member of the Design Victoria (2008-2011), was appointed to the Academy of Technological Science and Engineering (ATSE) committee in 2012 and in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the profession of Biomedical Engineering was awarded the 2012 David Dewhurst Award by Engineers Australia, College of Biomedical Engineers.

Here's a picture of an Optotronics Desk at what was then MediaSound South Yarra that became Platinum and eventually Sing Sing South with some other name changes along the way (Riverbank, Kiss etc). The engineer is John Mcdiamond who went to the Uk and worked for SSL among others over there. The session was in 76-77, a song of mine.

The second pic is my studio Yorkstreet in Nth Fitzroy around 81, a Daniel Deserie hot rodded Auditronics Son of 36 grand and the first Otari Mtr 90 mk 2 in the country, Tannoy Classics (Grahame Thirkell designed boxes).

The room was designed by Grahame and Dave Flett both good friends of mine. (they worked on my room for free!)

Those were the days I had 4 U47's all given to me (some needed some tlc)

That sure looks like Central (SAE) as I remember it - looks like the cover of one of the early Sound Recording magazines too..... I don't remember Tom's soundcraft being automated at the time though

Slightly off topic but I met a man today here in Melbourne by the name of George Alexandra, who would be in his 60's.

Worked on countdown and mixed many a band back in the day, probably did a whole bunch more, but he didn't want to talk about it.

Fascinating lovely man, anyone here know anything thing about him.

Ps his small living room was full of phase linar poweramps and at least 6 speakers (a side stacked) all vintage including wharfdale's JBL's etc all plugged in and switchable, the main pair of JBL's (the classic studio monitors from the 70's/80's) powered by a hand built valve amp and plugged through the old Dbx sub harmonic half rack unit, sounded amazing.

Yes Wez, I sold the building to a nameless audio school that cut down and ruined the recording space.
Quincy came later on and is renting from the new owners, but the space is not the same.

Thought i would resurrect this thread because of the " Historically significant gear you own" thread and that i don't own this desk.
Its an Optro from the time Armstrongs got their first Optro 16 trk tape machine and I couldn't help noticing some similarity to my Audek.

Crossfire in the Studio 1972. What studio I'm not sure but a guess would be Festival. Check out the Faders on that console......where is it now? Great band by the way!





( just thought i would add it was emi castlereagh street sydney , EMI TG console , oasis bought it off Buzz Bistrup who bought it from 301 for about ten bucks cos it was deemed junk .- Rick )
