The Inevitable Mac + Protools Upgrade

Ok fellas
I’m in a bit of a pickle yet again as my Mac Pro 1,1 has spat the dummy and finally decided not to boot up at all despite swapping in & out various hardware and yelling numerous profanities.


I have:
2006 Mac Pro 1,1 running Snow Leopard
ProTools HD2 pci-e + Protools 8HD
2x Lynx Aurora 16 + HD card
1x Burl B2 ADC

2014 MacBook Pro running Mavericks

Digi002 (currently unused however I want to put it to use printing 2-track into MBP or another computer)
ProTools LE 7.4 (currently unused)


I’m still wanting to have a main desktop setup for 90% of the work and also a second, portable rig for location records and printing 2-track. I'm happy with the HD2 at the moment however an additional Accel card would be sweet as I'm working with high track counts @ 96k.
I would be stoked to end up with a traditional MP or trashcan with HDX/Native/TB + Lynx for my main rig and a MBP with 002/orion/other + Burl for my portable rig.


Unfortunately I have $0 saved up to replace this machine so I’m looking at either:

Upgrading PTLE to PT11 and install on MBP if there is an exchange currently available however that won’t let me use the Lynx interfaces but it would get me working in some capacity (will PT11 work with the Digi002, even if it’s not ‘officially' supported? Heaven forbid me going back to the 002…….)

Upgrading PTLE to PT11 and install on MBP + buying a thunderbolt card for each Lynx.

Buying a second hand Mac Pro

Reluctantly withdrawing on my paid out credit card to buy a 3-slot magma chassis for HD2.

Using credit card to upgrade from 002 to Native Thunderbolt.

Using credit card to upgrade from HD2 (and possibly 002 or second hand 96io/192) to Native Thunderbolt.

What have you guys done? Any other options I haven’t thought of??

Self serving suggestion..... you could purchase my copy of PT9/PT9HD and use any interface you like with your MBP over thunderbolt / firewire over thunderbolt / USB......

Then you could upgrade from PT9HD to PT11HD in the future for about $1100

Don't want to rain on your parade, but...

At least since v9, Avid doesn't allow HD license transfers, so Ian would have to surrender his Avid account or at least facilitate your impersonating him for the upgrade. (And then there's the bother with the ilok.)

Haha - scarcely a drizzle

My PT9 comes with an iLok and was purchased new from a U.S. reseller. It is not registered to me, but lists the owner as "Another User". So the licence is mine and is legal. However, I don't doubt what you say about transfer - I've never tried that - just installed the s/w and iLok and off it went.

Having said all that I would add - if it's for personal / private use I can't see a problem as a licence is a licence, but if it's for an enterprise or business requiring contracted support it may not be worth the hassle.

mate do you know what died in the mac pro?
i keep a pretty good stock of spares (though have just sold my last 1.1)
you should be able to get a 1.1 build pretty damn cheap on ebay..

hey gareth,
it's coming up on the monitor with the same problem as before... after the white apple logo screen it goes to the blue boot-up screen then hangs on a white pixellated screen. it doesn't even make it to the log-on...
as I said a few weeks ago maybe it's just time to get a newer mac pro

I'm using PT11 on a 2012 iMac and it's been pretty good.
Thunderbolt interface and TB drives.

@nath - If you need some pros to look at the machine I've got a muso friend who works for Mac Centre in Sydney. They look after 301 I believe, amongst many others.

ive worked with them since they started (some great crew moved over from next byte)
likewise can recommend them highly
