toslink (optical) to SPDIF

anyone had any experience with converting toslink (for instance the digital audio in and out standard on a mac pro) to SPDIF coax (so not actually converting the format - just the transmission style)
seem to be plenty of little boxes that do it, and "should" be straight forward.
but have you done it?
did it work?
did you test to see if it was sample accurate?
etc etc
would love to save some messing around time if someone has a definite experience

I bought a little doohickey from jaycar that works. But can't say for sure that it isn't doing anything beyond straight format conversion.

Similar experience: bought a Fostex COP-1 (small box that converts both ways) which works, but again, sample accuracy??
Don't use any more, you can have it if you want it

I do this all the time via the ZSYS router... never had a problem, but like most people I've never done a scientific test - only real world observations. Optical cables are convenient for mutlitchannel audio but they make me very nervous and I avoid them wherever possible.

I also have one of those little Fostex boxes but I don't think I've ever used it.

yeah the Jaycar/Altronics boxes do it no problems, I usually just route it through a DAT/CD-R with both SPDIF/Toslink inputs and outputs. I have a digital patch bay, a Midiman I think, that has toslink and SPDIF in and out and converts between formats as well.
