the only thing worse that robotised 'online mastering' would be that godawful DSP crap that you get on home hifi.

it's funny too how many parallels there are between photography and audio. so this is pretty much like 'auto correction' in photoshop - it just makes photos brighter (louder) and more colour saturated (smiley face EQ).

This is something I notice all the time. The processes are very similar, at least I feel like they activate the same parts of my brain when working in both mediums. I find there always seems to be a visual equivalent for something I do often in audio.

For me the one test of it's worth, of whether the algorithm works, is to upload an already mastered track. If the track is mastered well, the algorithm should make the decision to do nothing to the mix. I tried it, this didn't happen.

The same test can be applied to find a good mastering engineer ;-)

I uploaded a track I mixed and compared the result to my "smooth the eq and make it louder" non-mastering. On that track the result was similar.

The machine can master as well as me, not a mastering guy. I think it will find a niche with those recording at home with no budget.

As Rick said, I can't see any money in that but I guess if it takes off they might make a living...

If you look at the footer of the landr page there is reference to a company called MixGenius - when you look them up they are working towards automated mixing. Interesting stuff from a technical/software point of view.

No doubt these type of products/services will improve over time, and I guess for the companies in the right place at the right time they might do well in the long run.

Next step will be automated session players that will add parts to uploaded tracks. Guess garage band on IOS touches on this with the automated instruments.

As in all things, in some cases the results will be better than some humans, but lacking that 'something' that a real musician/engineer/producer can bring to the table under the right circumstances.

............well then there is the iRealPro app for " instant backing band" for jazz standards. Sort of like a pre programmed backing band loaded with Real Book charts. Actualy it's not bad as a teaching aid but I can just see musos plugging it into the PA at their local winery gig and practising their solos for the night

I must admit the auto pilot on my boat is awesome and so handy to have it steer the boat while I do something else like, make a coffee, cook dinner, change a sail, pull in a fish, have a quick nap....... A wise old salt did remind me the other day though that autopilots are totally blind!
