First of all you'll need $100K to start off and hope no one rips you off. I don't make a living out of this stuff, it's just a way to buy more gear.

Hey Nic, if you were purchasing 1 pre and 1 mic from what you own (500 series inc ) , what would they be and why?

No he said 500 series module, remember you don't have any of those, your boss Tim has. You really need to get some of those personalized recall sheets.

Actually nIC I said "(500 series inc)" which doesn't exclude rack mounts including Mercury etc.
Am looking for a combo which handles being pushed, with grace and is easy on the ears.

Was originally thinking of an MA5 and either an AK47/Blue Woodpecker/Wunder Gt/Peluso 2247SE none of which i've heard.
I've used and discounted the 87 because they can get a tad harsh in upper mids IME . The Kiwi sounds very good in clips I've heard but again I'm concerned without any experience of it that it may be a bit too aggresive when pushed.

Because I live in Alice Springs it's difficult to hear combinations particularly if they are from different importers so thought I'd get the feelings of someone who has experience with much of where I'm thinking.
In the light of what you say i'll look closer at Joe's pres.

Thanks for replying - if anyone else has any thoughts feel free.

In that case the Mercury M72 is my favorite pre at the moment...very big round sound almost 3 dimensional. The AK47 is a great mic but not a all rounder like the Kiwi. You should get a Kiwi on USA ebay for around $1200 .......getting a bit hard to find at that price, but they do come up now and again.
The JLM gear is worth a really good look and are value for money pres at $900 per module. Joe is working on a Neve style 500 series pre which I reckon will give the MA5 a run for the money.
