WTB Oberheim DPX 1, Emulator ii

Hi People,
I am in search of an Oberheim DPX-1
I have an EMU Emulator ii and a big library of floppies but the Eii is pretty unreliable despite being purchased by a really honest U.S seller who said it was fully serviced and in amazing condition.
I thought "Wow, how could this possibly go wrong??!!", It was ebay after all and everyone on ebay is totally honest .
It turned up pretty trashed.
It works now, but midi is playing up and not playing voices consistently when sequenced from other devices .

Anyway, I'd like this as a booby prize and at least I'll be able to play the sample libraries if the Emulator isn't working .

Anyone got one they want to offload ?
A working reliable one, that is.

Sorry to hear about your Emulator, who would have thought there were untrustworthy sellers on Ebay!
I'd love to own an E2, but I'm worried about reliability issues these days.
I recently bought the UVI Emulation 2 plugin, which is an excellent replica of the E2 library. (There's an E1 version too)
Just thought I'd mention this as an alternative, though if plugins don't do it for you, just ignore this message!

After spending so much going down this road, I'm keen to get the Emulator running better and to keep the Oberheim DPX-1 sample player as a back up.
I am told it plays the samples well and is pretty true to the original.
After hours of work last night the Emulator spazzed out as I was finally tracking it,
every time I even move it I feel like it's going to die.
I have no doubt the plug in is fantastic though and would save me a lot of pain but I'm pretty stubborn and have great affection for old and unreliable gear .
Plus I've got these big libraries of floppies...

Appreciate the response and definitely the smart choice you've made with the plug in!

If you are going to try and repair the EII start by having the power supply serviced and re-capped or installing a compatible replacement supply. By now the PSU electro caps will be shot if they haven't been replaced at some time since the machine was new.

I'd like to send it to you but I guess it's too fragile to ship and I've been advised against it.
I'll find someone in Melbourne to get it up to scratch I guess.
It's not the greatest example around.

Hi Dave, I will take a look and see if I can find a DPX-1. I agree, shipping an EII is not a good idea.

There is DPX-1 in my store room, the owner would probably be willing to sell however I will have to find time to run it up and test that it's all working.

Ran up the DPX-1 and it booted OK, got up and went to get a disk and there was a loud, deep "boom" and smoke jetted out of every vent in the machine. Once for the scrap heap unfortunately, it needs a new switchmode supply.

Yeah that's a common problem with the DPX-1's.

I've got one somewhere, and if my memory serves me well, I think the DPX-1 will convert the Emulator discs to Akai format... but don't quote me on that. If it is the case, then you could borrow or hire one, convert the disc's, pickup a cheap Akai S1000 and use it as playback machine.

Anyhow I'll see if I can find mine... but it won't be for a few weeks as I'm stretched with work until then.

So far.. Every DPX I've seen has had its X2 caps blow up.

Every Linn9000 I've seen - same thing .. Same power supply too. Lol

Ive got one for Dave( and have been talking to him for a few days)...tested and working fine !
I bought a NOS one last year but when
I turned it on,,.you can guess what. !
Luckily i also have the one i bought in 1988 which has never given me a problem ever.
So i put the good psu into the NOS one and its fine.
Tedted and good to go !
Btw the Dpx 1 can write sounds to its own internal format.

Hi Mike, thanks for the reminder. I haven't switched my Linn 9000 on for 20 years!... and was recently thinking about firing it up... so after that timely advice I think I'll recap the power supply, just to be on the safe side.

Didn't know they use the same PSU as the DPX-1.

That's what I love about this forum... random information... and most of it is useful.

Hope you're making good use of that MXR Dual Limiter.
