Interesting gear and very tempting, again from Phil.. (Hi mate, hope you're doing well!) :)
How much would proharmonic's opamp mod be? I have read a testimonial on Proharmonic site on the mod..does anyone else have experience with them modded?
Thinking of selling a Distressor to get these and mod them..
Cheers

I have a pair of silver faces that are just back from Rob. They are definitely way smoother sounding with the mod.
Unmodded they have have an edgier sound due to a slightly distorted waveform. Rob removes this tendency & makes them pretty silky. I use them as parallel on busses mainly but it's quite common to be used tracking as well.

I have an Alactronics modded LA4 (silverface). It's had way more than just an op-amp replacement though. Not sure how it compares to Rob's mod (which I'm sure is everything you would need). It basically takes it from a dull sounding compressor that really only works on very specific sources, to a go-to unit that is excellent on just about anything.

But don't tell anyone.

Good price... surprised they haven't already sold.

Forget about buying them from the States, with the dollar dropping every day and increased freight prices it's not even an option.

Even stock standard, no mod, these are still a good limiter.

For those with LA4's, and are handy with a soldering iron, here's a good link.

Hope this helps.

For a quick upgrade to the LA-4, though not as good as Rob's full treatment, you can replace the 4136 op amps with a TL075 .these are a little known variant of the TL07x series that is a pin for pin drop in replacement for a 4136 with Much better performance but low current draw. I bought a bunch off eBay for about $3 each. Some LA-4 variant use an obscure op amp in a round package in the output stage. A 5534 can go there on a customised wire wrap socket.
The op 275 and other exotic opamps will give better performance, but the TL075 is a real quick cheap solution to those old bits with 4136 opamps in them
