Dpa 4060 in the studio

Postby Vic » Tue Mar 10, 2015 12:17 pm

Hi all

Next week I'll be using a pair of DPA 4060's. For some field recordings. I was just wondering if anyone out there have tried them for applications in the studio ?

Hi Vic,
Sometimes hard wired but mainly with radio transmitter packs.
I use them as close string mics mounted on the DPA string clip, or in f holes.
For opera singers mounted on the head.
TV host/guest lapel.
As audience mics when a low profile is required.
I was told when they came out that the 4090 was just a 4060 housed in a body.
Really useful mics.

Hi Jason - tell us about mounting them on the head!
I had no idea this happened - do the hairdressers and engineers get involved with mic placement ?

I've been doing the head placement with these for a few years now for musicals / stage productions I mix. Placement is usually on the hairline, top of forehead. We work with hairdresser and make up, putting the mic on before make up as part of the hair job. Sometimes if a hat is worn I will place the lead over the ear with the capsule a a bit in front. A good PA is essential with great off axis rejection from the speaker cabs. Fold back kept to a minimum.......i use side fill mostly with monitor send post fade so as actors walk off and on there are no feedback and when they are back stage waiting they arn't in fold back. Did a show 4 years ago with a live orchestra in front of the stage on floor level ie no orchestra pit, and still managed to get enough of vox in the mix

Hey Chris,
Yeah pretty much what Chris H said.
The operas we did were in HD for cinema and DVD release,
so we had to hide the mics as much as possible.
Mainly in wigs and hair but there were challenges in a couple of shows.
One was the king and I with a bald singer, another had all leads in swimming costumes with nowhere to hide radio transmitter pack.
But the hardest one of all was Un Ballo in Maschera where the cast wore headgear for parts of the show. So a mic might start off in the hair for act one and be switched at some point to a lapel or under a blouse so that when they pulled off the headgear you wouldn't see wires and mics. It took about 2 days planning with assistant stage mangers and costume an wigs departments to see if we could actually do it. Here's a picture of said headgear.

A radio mic tech skit bag is full of skin coloured medical & clear plastic tapes to keep mics attached to skin that gets really sweaty during the performance,(those singers are really working hard) all sorts of hair clips, alcohol swabs scissors, and condoms. Some singers sweat so much the mics get drenched and stop working, and a cut down condom is the only way to stop it.

Tough gig.
