WTB and Reccommendations on DI (Reddi perhaps?)

Postby Vic » Sat Jun 27, 2015 11:41 am

Hi All,

I'm looking to invest in a DI, something nice and smooth but that has some life to it.

Any thoughts out there on the Reddi DI and does anyone have anything interesting lying around?

The Avalon DI is a very good all round. You can get a very modern hifi top end with the most extended low end. Paired with a 1073 and you've got it all. Nat

I had the Reddi and wouldn't highly recommend it to be honest. It's good but the DIs on the TG2 / TG chan are much better. Avalon is good. Giles DI is great

i personally love the avalon U5 DI as mentioned by others
particularly for bass.
but also awesome on acoustic guitar.
ive used it a lot live as well as in studio.

i wouldnt say its "clean" if that bothers you - certainly has a "sound"

hope that helps rather than confuses!

http://www.radialeng.com/jdv.php is one of the best DIs I've ever used. On electric bass a UA LA-610 Mk1 with good tubes wins over that, but good luck finding one. (don't even bother with a MkII)

The Avalon is nice, but for me both of the above beat it.

DI-ing acoustic guitar in the studio is heresy, and should be outlawed. :p

Best of luck!

ps. I'll bet that V71 is awesome. How much would you want for it, Barney?

I will start its own thread but $700 for the V71.

U5 is still my go to. I've also been loving the Burl B1 lately.

to clarify my earlier (and following on from some other posts)
the radial J48 is the "best" DI i have used in that its completely neutral, you literally dont know its there. perfect at doing a very clean job.
the avalon i love cause it sounds like "something"
and as i mentioned in my earlier its not clean. i think the sound it makes is great - others might not like it.

you mentioned you wanted something "nice" "smooth" and with "life"
i dont think a radial (being a perfectly clean/ clear/ neutral unit) is what you are looking for - despite it being an excellent unit.
i own multiple radial and avalon, and use both all the time both live and in studio.

I have the Avalon U5, but often prefer the BAE DMP. One of the best DIs I have found and a great price considering you get a Jensen transformer based DI going into a 1073 mic pre.

Its funny, we all like different flavoured milk shakes... 8)

I own the BAE DMP and the Radial DI mentioned above...

I don't use the BAE at all, I do use the Radial, I also have DI's in my 5 JLM preamps, TG500 NV500 99NV and Baby Animals, all sound different.

I most often use the Radial, for the reason Gareth mentioned above , its clean , solid, has some good features on it.

cheers

I was using a great river DI for bass and it was awesome!!

Rupert Neve released a DI, I'd be interested to know if anyone has used one....

I bought my REDDI off Lee Cardan (see above comment) and love it. I also have Great River and a Mike-E (EL9) pres. I am a bassplayer and every time I try the Great River or EL9 DI without the REDDI I quickly go back to the REDDI. I feel as if something is missing without it.
