For me, my "I've just come in to a billion dollars to build my ultimate studio" room has always been the Forum theatre in the Melbourne CBD. Every time I'm there I just love the sound.

Naturally it would never work financially, but hey, we can all dream.

The Thirkle design works great and is the one I'm most familiar with. I have had a small amount of time in Sing Sing and Metropolis's Studio one a West-lake design, and the west-lake room is similar to thirkles being live /diffused.
The Thirkle room is the same design as the ABC's control room at South-bank, only bigger. The front side walls are angled to reflect the sound to the rear diffuser which i large...ceiling to floor and covering most of the rear wall. The room is not a live end / dead end design, but rather has a controlled and tuned reverberant sound ,and has hermoltz resonators for the fine tuning of the room. Graham Thirkle measured the room after construction was complete but before the fit-out was finished . One of the strong points of the room is the consistency of sound when you move about the room. It is a big room with high ceilings but i don't have the measurements with me. I have noticed that people used to smaller control rooms, bring in their speakers and think the bass is lacking, but it's actually a more accurate setting for them to hear what is coming out of their speakers rather than issues like their room giving bass an apparent boost because of smaller size and the closeness of the monitors to the wall etc.
My own home studio is not ideal but has high gabled ceilings and plenty of volume, two qualities that go a long way to contributing to a good mix / monitoring environment. The desk and near field monitors are a good 5 feet from the wall. Other things can be done to deal with parallel walls, control reflections and add diffusion.
