RE: Question about leasing a small studio space in Sydney

How is your space going to be used? Each room rented by a different person? How much are you charging etc? And why did you build it?

Each room is rented/owned by a different person (there's three of us) and all are wired in to the live rooms. We all book around each other for the live space. I built it so I could have a private studio essentially, I don't want to lease it out to other engineers as it's essentially my daily workspace. The live room is flexible but wont suit all my work and the other engineers using it wont affect my work in my control room.

yes the live room is certainly the easy thing to "share"
and for lots of us its the least used bit - so that works

but dave - say the same setup as myles existed in sydney with great control rooms for long or short time hire.
what would you pay?
and what facilities would be a dealbreaker for you?

Well...how much do you charge Myles?

I think I'd pay $200 a week for that. That's probably about what I could afford. Maybe it's worth a lot more than that. The access to live room thing is the most important part to me. Currently recording bands in my house which is fine but it would be nice to not have all my gear in the same place that I live in, blah blah there's plenty of reasons why it's good. What do you think's a reasonable price Gareth?

Myles, how are you combating the noise of three control rooms with a live room?
Is one control space a container? How is that working out?
I've always loved this idea of multi rooms based around one live room..but Rod Gervais was the one who warned/reminded me of the amount of work you need to do to get things to be that isolated. (Like 1 metre thick walls, 6 pane Windows..everything floating separately). So someone could record something soft in the live room while other control rooms are banging out rock mixes...and the other way round.
Just interested to hear what sort of layers you've been doing, design thoughts..and if you've done any testing of your isolation as yet.

Most definitely bumped in and recording. One control room is a container but that one isn't running yet. Yes there are compromises but that's the beauty of a private studio, everybody works around each other. The live room is mud brick walled and double layer ortech ceiling. The control rooms are dual layers of 13mm soundcheck. windows are 12mm laminate with two layers. There are still a few elements to finish but it works pretty well so far, but roaring gtr amp overdubs whilst recording string quartet is not possible. But if you work in a team then you simply schedule around that sort of thing. I'm sure Gervais is right, build for complete isolation when every body wants to be blaring is realistically almost impossible.

And at $200 a week that doesn't even cover our rent let alone the investment in building, equipment, etc. Especially when you consider that you would be charged a minimum of double that to be in any reasonable studio per day even without an engineer!

I'm not saying $200 per week -that's David. I'm saying up to 250 for half week on a long commitment lease.
