wanted High end Tube Mic

Hi all t-rockers

Looking for a high end tube mic, open to what's out there or even suggestions..

something along the lines of Gefell, Flea, Wunder, Bock etc or open to something else in that range.

Style of mic I'd be interested in is along the u67/M49 sound, not really interested in the 47 sound or the modern Neumann sound.

Interested to see what the brains trust throws up.

We have a Flea 47 and recently a Bock 251.

The Flea has the typical U47 mid presence combined with a solid low end.
I consider it more of a feller's mic especially through a Neve for rock or a Mercury V72 for more of a crooner flavour.

However I have found the Flea can also work pretty well with females through our Mercury V76 which tends to sweeten it a little.

The Bock I'm still getting used to but was surprised how much low end extension it has.
The mids are very smooth and it has more air than the Flea.

The Bock's high end is very sweet and focused and sibilance is well controlled.
Initially I felt it was a bit darker than I expected but now I find if you back off it until the proximity levels out it's a pretty damn fine mic.

The Bock can seem almost a little scooped compared to the Flea 47 but it's the Flea's mids that can trick you into thinking that when AB'ing the two mics.

On vox the Bock's low end seems to feel about right at around 8 inches rather than 6 or even 4 as with some other less weighty LDC's.

I have just been running through a Seventh Circle Audio J99 preamp which is a Twin Servo style clone and the Bock sounded glorious.

So I can recommend the Bock and feel with a little EQ and proximity tailoring it would be quite versatile.
The Bock also sounds pretty stellar on acoustic guitar.

G'Day Mark, I just got my Bock 251 back from servicing by Gunter - capsule clean. I haven't plugged it in yet but I'm worried if I do I won't want to part with it as planned! Anyway, as I mentioned a while back I'm looking to move on most of my gear sooner than later so send me an email if you're interested in a 251 style mic.

Hi Mark,

I can highly recommend the Soyuz 017. Superbly well balanced tube mic, nice bit of low end weight (and thickness in the proximity effect when you need it) and lovely sweet top end that never gets harsh.
