G5 phones output

Postby Howard Jones » Wed Sep 12, 2007 3:27 pm

Has anyone on the forum used the 3.5mm minijack headphone output on a G5? Did it work okay?

Reason I ask is, we just hooked one up this morning and found that one channel didn't work. After some mucking around, we found that the Mac doesn't give a L-R output. Instead, it seems to give some pseudo-balanced mono output. (The line output on the Mac worked as expected)

Thanks,
Howard

i just loaded up a logic session without my interface - headphones straight into the jack at the front.

solo'd hard and medium panned channels and messed around with pan on channels and busses and everything played back as it should have.

i've got a quad 2.5mhz g5.

this probably doesn't help you at all howard, but i tried.

I appreciate the responses - they are both helpful. There may be something wrong with this particular Mac.

Cheers,

Supplementary question:

Has anyone connected the G5 phones output to the input of an amplifier? What was the result?

If you plug in cans does it register in system preferences?

If it doesn't, it could either be a faulty board, or alternatively a loose cable from the sub board that the headphone socket is attached to, and the actual logic board myself.
I got caught out there on one of my G5's after I had moved it.

If it does show in system preferences, assuming that you selected it as your output in sys prefs ;-) than you could try the following...

Repair Disk Permissions
Create a new user - does this fix problem?
Boot from another O/S volume - You can install to a Firewire based iPod - which works fine for testing - not good fro long term use tho.
Reset P-RAM hold down Apple-Option-P-R when the machine boots, keep holding it till the startup chime has played 4 times.
Reset PMU - unplug pwr cable- hold down pwr button for 10 seconds - than plug in and re-boot.

Failing that - drop off at your local service centre - or arrange an onsite if you have Applecare.
