Advice on a dilemma.

Postby Dangerous C » Fri Feb 01, 2008 4:09 pm

Hi there,
I'll cut to the chase... I have been involved in making a very DIY album with friend, so far so good and little to no budget to speak of. We have reached a point in the project where we are ready to re-amp our drums/guitar/bass tracks, and had found a really nice place to do out business for free.

I just got a phonecall saying that we can't use the space. Someone found out we were tracking a record there and complained, it's all to do with politics in this particular place, I shan't go into detail as acrimony solves nothing.

Long to short, we need a suggestion as to what we can do. We are still trying to make this day (this Sunday) work for us... Or to put it another way
"What would you do if this was you?"
We're not pro's, and we have very little in the way of cashflow, and we're stuck in the inner west of Sydney...

Just wondering if any of the posters on this forum have some suggestions for us. Anything is appreciated...

Thanks for reading all

hey man,

im not sure how you reamp drums, by that i assume u mean u wanna record the good version now? if so...try programming with DFH...if you know someone with it?

With guitars....if you kno anyone with Native Instruments guitar rig software....its not THE BEST, but its pretty sick for what it is..

bass...can be DI'd...

do you guys have anything in terms of a home recording platform, coz if you do, you can rent some sweet mics and pre's...and do what needs doing at home... depends what ur definition of "little budget" means i guess.

If you were counting on doing something at a studio for free, i guess ur next best option is begging....saving money to do it at a mid class studio....or doing it at home with hired gear....Nick (username "Aearth" rents out sweet gear at sweet prices)

u havent said much in terms of when the deadline is...and or why this sunday is so important?

dunno if i've suggested anything new here...or anything helpful...

Jamil.

Hey dude,
You're right. I was somewhat scant with the details. Our lack of contingency was with regard to a venue, rather than a method. We have demo'ed everything with DFH and Guitar Rig, while it's a useful composition tool it wouldn't cut the standard. We're basically tracking a second full length for a band on a large indie label from overseas.
We have all the tools (hired some pre's, own the mics) we just need a place we can crank our amps that won't break the bank. We were considering setting up in a rehearsal studio, but in having done this before the monitoring is nigh on impossible without booking 2 rooms to work in, after hiring pre's and a pair of oversized 4 x 12's it gets costly, then there is the issue of wether its best to isolate each cabinet, that would mean booking an additional room on the day... It's starting to seem expensive now.
The other thing was the re-amping drums. Ok, that's cool. It's from Bob Rocks playbook. This place we were in origionally had a massive PA, I mean MASSIVE (15kW!) to play a kick and snare heavy submix through. We lean on it with a bit of compression and record it back into the DAW with a pair of tube mics, sounds real nifty...

It's wearing on now, being this fastidious on a shoestring budget means that it's coming along slowly, and we have a guy who owns the label asking "Vhy iz dis rekort taking so long?" Also, we knowed back work to make this day happen and we've already started to plan our lives around finishing it off, it's just a bummer and I hate it when a plan falls apart.

We were just hoping for a suggestion for a tracking location that would be available as a space, for us to work in at our own pace and wouldn't cost very much... I think we're asking for something that's impossible to find now that I read this back...

yeah man, you said it..

if there was a free "space" to record in....every tom dick and harry would be making killer metal albums...

i dont know of anywhere good and free to record in...alternately, you could contact some of the smaller adverts for producers in drum media....and see if they have any connections or can help you out...again that will probably result in shit all....

good luck man..all the best in your venture :)

Let me get this straight....

you're "tracking a second full length for a band on a large indie label from overseas" and you have no budget???

Why did you take the job when the label clearly has funds? That sounds nuts to me.

Contact your local uni. See if you can book a space in a lab, lecture theatre or other room on a weekend.
Get some media students to film everything which legitimises your band and validates their work.
Do not tell everyone and get a crowd, unless you want one.
I am sure some dept will be forthcoming....

If you have a guy who owns the label saying this to you, why isn't he funding some of this for you? - at least ask him to book a studio to 'finish' off the album!!

I think we're asking for something that's impossible to find now that I read this back...

Yep!

Couldn't agree more Kris!
Why is a "large overseas indie label" recording here in Oz on NO budget? They should have their own places they use in their own country..
Seems a little strange to me..

Sorry, but the more I think about this the dumber it sounds.

You're doing work for a large Indie label and there are no funds.

Get on the phone and talk to Herr Label Owner and shake him down. You don't have time to be fastidious. Get the record done and get paid or else you won't be making records for very long.

If a space is your problem and the stuff your doing is loud, ask around the band and their friends userally two degrees of seperation someone has a friend with a shed on a farm or large block of land, that they are willing to let you use for few beers. I've done it a few times now. Acocstics userally are not great but playing around you can mostly get something useful. It may mean waiting for the odd tractor to go past or taking the snare out side to scare off the crows, but if your not willing to pay for a space, even a rehearsal space your asking alot. The other space I've used is a theatre when its dark, most are still warming up at this time of the year, it may take more sweet talking however and a lot more beer.
