Why we wont be writing for audiotechnology anymore

Postby rick » Mon Nov 14, 2011 8:01 pm

Hi folks
thanks for all the concern about me regarding my absence In the latest issue of audiotechnology
I have had my own wheels to spin

However I will not be writing another word For audiotechnology or anything the owners of the magazine
Have any kind of interest in

You guys know me, you know what kind of man i am

There are some lines in the sand that just dont get crossed by guys like me

If you like my stuff... dont panic i need to contribute
Just not for people who dont hold the same values as me .

The only reason I subscribed was because I'm a member of this forum. I didn't even know about it until TR. I have no idea what happened but I will not be renewing my subscription.

I gave up on that mag years ago - but whenever I was in the newsagent buying SOS I would try to have a quick read of the last page or two!

I live under a rock - what has happened?

I read Rick's columns if they have been republished to the TR site.

What the industry needs is a "vendor-independent" resource, meaning that ad revenues don't come from the companies you are reviewing. Once there is enough traffic, general advertising revenue (ie not specific to pro audio) is enough to support the publication (of course not having to physically publish anything removes an enormous overhead).

This has already happened in the IT world - see Tom's Hardware. That site is so influential it actually forced Intel to withdraw a processor from the market back in 2000.

It's all much easier said than done however. The bane of all web publications is the fact that without content there are no readers, without readers there is no ad revenue, and without revenue it is very hard to create content.

I think you are right in that it probably should be something online.
Not a forum like this, or Gearslutz. A place where people with cred write articles, and gear gets explained, reviewed.
There are enough experienced and interesting characters living Down Under to write the stuff.

(Would love to know what all the fuss is about though)

I thought AT was heading towards being an online publication ??

I always found some articles of value in AT and would much rather support an Oz publication than one from OS, but, unfortunately and regardless of politics, SOS offers (me) better value for money.

Not looking for a slagging session on the mag guys
Just letting you all know i wont be contributing
To it or anything the owners do again

You will hear stories over the oncoming months I guess
but i certainly wont be involved any longer - i have no contracts i never have
i am free to do what i like

but i just couldnt stomach it ...writing another word for them
you have to draw the line in sand with who you will supoort and who you wont in this world

Just felt like i should let you all know I am out ,
so if you hear wierd things you can do your own research and know that before you heard stories
i was already out

Its the simpliest way i could think of without causing anybody any harm or letting untruths be told unchecked

Wonder if they'll give me a discount on my renewal if I phone up saying I only subscribed for Last Word? :-s

I did just renew my AT and still enjoy some of the articles, even if the mag isn't as good as it once was in some ways. But sorry to hear your column won't be part of it Rick, it was a great read and one of my favourite parts of the mag.

My subscription ended with the issue before the current one. I was disappointed when I purchased the current issue and your article was not there, Rick.

Integrity is lacking in a lot of places and it seems almost unfashionable to have it.

Thanks again Rick for your contribution to the mag in the past - I have really enjoyed it the most.

Very disappointing news rick - your column was the first I turned to, like most everybody else here...

I get my AT gratis so I'll still be flicking through, but I long ago realised it's (mostly) yet another marketing tool for the advertisers. Rob's column is also excellent, so I wonder if his days are numbered too...

Good on you for holding to your principles. I admire and respect that.

...and thanks for all those great articles over the years!!

well who knows ? everybody involved with the magazine has their own race to run
everybody gets to work out how they want to be seen publically

none of us are actual journalists as such , so it all depends on why you were writing for them i guess :)

On a similar... yet entirely random note... I am in a pickle.

Last night I purchased 4 slabs of James squires for $70 delivered to my door.

Do I lack intregity because I purchased thinking "they have definitely made a mistake... oh well... cheap beer for me!"...

Or do they lack integrity because they have suddenly realised "nope, we made a mistake... you aren't getting any!".

Rememeber Gents, this is Beer we are talking about. Beer.
